The Influence of Jazz In Music

Music is something that is arguably a part of everybody’s lives, from listening, playing, and even composing. However, there is a great difference from being forced to partake in it than to truly enjoy it, as it can have a much greater effect for both the creators and the viewers.

Music has been used to convey emotions and messages. Usually, lyrics would be used to show those emotions. When there are no lyrics, however, the overall tone and style of the piece is used to convey a story or emotion. I believe that this is a more impressive method since for lyrical songs, just the words would be used with the background music supporting it, but in non-lyrical songs, the instruments can convey emotions without words. One genre of music that effectively captivates feelings is jazz.

Jazz originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States. With its roots in blues and ragtime, jazz has spread around the world and evolved into many forms over time. Subgenres such as bebop, big band, and Latin jazz. Jazz is characterized mainly by attributes such as swing and blue notes, polyrhythms, and improvisation. Over time, jazz has even been mixed with other genres such as jazz-rock fusion, which was developed by combining jazz improvisation with rock rhythms and electric instruments, to create jazz fusion songs. Some famous musicians known for their works and influence on the genre of jazz include Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Louis Armstrong. Jazz has been able to take attributes of older genres of music and turn it into something very enjoyable to everybody as time progressed.

To be able to enjoy and play music is in fact very simple. As long as one knows the basics of their instrument and music theory, they can create and play music. Some instruments can even help one play other ones that are similar to it. For example, a basic instrument that helps one understand music in general is the piano. The piano, including a very wide range of instruments, can greatly help one understand and play most instruments and pieces of music. It helps the player with melody, chords, rhythm, and much more to help one understand music better. Another way to learn music more is to study music theory. Music theory is the study of the practices and possibilities of music. It includes many lessons about how music can be composed and played so that one can understand the piece they are playing and how to create great pieces themselves.

Music is something with endless possibilities with new concepts being brought to life everyday. By understanding how the basics of music theory and instruments work, one can create great works and even branch off to create new styles that can influence the world of music in the future.
